Shaw's Nightmare general discussion

Postby musa » Sat Jun 04, 2016 1:09 pm

Shaw's Nightmare is a DOS 3D game by Mickey Productions. It uses the BUILD engine by Ken Silverman.

Story
You are Shaw. You were reading a book then you fell asleep. Suddenly,
your headphones start picking up strange sounds: static, men yelling orders,
screams, bones cracking and finally silence. Then a hole grew and you are
sucked into it.

Things aren't looking too good. You have never been alone in your life.
Plus you don't have your father's guns. If only you could get a hold of a
rapid catapult or a camera gun, you could protect yourself.

Suddenly a scout boy comes and you stabbed him with a nearby knife. Then
angry growls arose. They know you're here. There's no turning back.

Could be fun if only the graphics were more inviting.

Overall textures could look better if they were to be made darker with less contrast and some reduced sharpness like Blood textures also have, that would greatly decrease the aliasing which is now still greatly seen in the screenshots.

Not sure what the rating would be since it's in a early stage of development.
Right now it's just another 'Build' shooter and so far not that original enough.

It's not in a early stage of development it's already complete. But if you are interested in the early stages of development, you can download the alphas from the official website.

There is a sequel in the works also and a Windows port is underway too.

I didn't know it was already complete, the last time I had taken a look and played at it was a few years ago and the screenshots reminded me of that.
A windows port would be nice but I think the graphics could be made a bit more appealing.

The texture quality is would you need to focus on. If you need inspiration the only thing I can point you to is Chex Quest, it can be played on zdoom now so it's pretty freely available.
However you should ask yourself is the Build engine that right engine for you. Judging from the screen shots zDoom or any Vanilla Doom port should do the trick, Slade http://slade.mancubus.net/index.php?page=about would be a good start, I use to map for doom for a couple of years then stopped when I had more responsibilities as I got older.

I chose the Build engine because it is the first engine I saw that could do what I wanted when I was looking for a engine. It is also the one that could be built for DOS.
To do what you're saying I would need to "reboot" the whole project or do conversation (Is there a Build->Doom converter?) so I think I'll just stick with the current build for Shaw's Nightmare.

Musa, Your still programming these games? hope your learning something. You always always ask the same questions on different forums and get similar responses.
