Postby Corvin » Sat Jun 30, 2018 7:33 am

I added a site search to RTCM.

http://www.r-t-c-m.com/help-and-search.html

If you know how to make it work better or have tips for me please let me know.

Few things that I can suggest.
Why you use DuckDuckGo instead of Google? It's little known search engine and when I see "In partnership with Yandex" it was a big "no" for me. Don't use Yandex or any it's services. Trust me, it's not even worth to try. But it's my personal opinion, so I don't want to force you to change it. But this search engine didn't work without JavaScript. Here is a code from my site to use Google.com (I change it for you) - you can try to test it if you want, works even without JavaScript enabled:

Code: Select all

<center>Site search<br>
<form target="_blank" method="get" action="http://www.google.com/search">
<input type="text" size="70" maxlength="300" value="" name="q">
<input type="hidden" value="www.r-t-c-m.com" name="as_sitesearch">
<input type="submit" value="Find">
<br>Powered by <a target="_blank" href="http://www.google.com/" class="navlink">Google</a>
</form>
</center>

"form" and "input" tags are mandatory and you can remove or change anything else as you want.

Thanks.

I'll have to look up out to get it to work properly as it doesn't like displaying results in a frame.
I have to get it to open in a new window/tab to display the results.

Short on time right now, but ill get back to it.

Thanks again.

Sorry. I edit my last post and add target="_blank" to open search result in a new window.

Edit: Updated code again to make it look more neat (increased field size, reaarranged text, centered, etc.).

One remark about site search: I read latest news on the RTCM main page and want to see what you change in the search page... yeah, that's the problem - I didn't know where it is. Well I remember that this forum topic has a link to it, but I try to imagine myself as a newbie who just opened your site and want to search for something.
So my suggestion - maybe it's worth to change "Help" in the navigation menu to "Help & Site Search" or "Help (with site search)" or something similar so anyone who wants to search something will exactly know where to go? Or move out site search to separate page and add it to the menu as separate link? I don't know how to do it better, but "site search" needs to be mentioned as words somewhere in the site navigation menu or it's will be hard to find it.

I meant to have done that before, I guess I strayed from it and forgot.
Thanks for the feedback.

Well as -=CHE@TER=- knows already, I had to switch search engines as the toilet boy TX put in his crappy web site duke4 related search in my site search results cause he sucks. lol.

I don't understand how at the very end of my site search results they added those custom links? Anyhow does anyone know how they where added?
They where listed as "Related Searches" with specific IDs.

Yes, I see you switched back to the DuckDuckGo engine.
Could you please tell me exactly what search query you're using in which Google show you the unrelated results?
You can probably hide it with -keyword params.
And also Google shows a related results to you, it's called related because it's similar to results to what people usually search. As I understand to completely redirect traffic (i.e. hide old site from the search results) to the new site you'll need to use Google Webmaster (it's called like that, I don't remember the exact name) tool and create a specific file in the root folder of the new and old (!) sites and turn on the specific option in Google Webmaster tool. Only after that all of the old search results will be removed. But since you didn't have access to the old site anymore it's unfortunatelly impossible...

eh, i sent you an e-mail.

It has all the signes of being a paid search related results insterted no matter what you search for.
I can't have that crap on the site. So I ditched google site search for the inferior one, for now.

I wasn't talking about the domain he bought from Usurper with a month left on the lease, but the related links at the bottom of the site search.

Needless to say I changed it. Sorry, but I had too.
Maybe I will readd it in future.
